Plus points

As before, Suriya excels in his dual roles of Kanguva and Francis. His performance as a warrior, who sacrifices his life for the promise he made to his clan. It is one of the main characteristics of the Kangaroo character. The film has great visuals, action and emotional elements. Which is exactly what fans expect to experience in a Suriya-starrer film.

Bollywood actress Disha Patani has done justice to her role as the leading lady with her unique skills. She mesmerized the youth with her beauty and acting skills in an ultra-glamorous avatar. Bollywood actor Bobby Deol also delivers a solid performance like his previous movies. There is a lot of depth to his character, Bobby has done an impressive job in his role. A fitting nemesis has been made for Suriya’s Kanguva character by director Siva. Natarajan Subramaniam also performed well. Showed strong presence on the big screen. KS Ravikumar, Yogi Babu, Kovai Sarala, Mansoor Ali Khan appear in important roles, and they deliver impressive acting skills.

A particular highlight of Kangoo is Karthi’s cameo appearance. The underwater sequences in the climax and pre-climax, emotional scenes between Chinna Babu and Suriya are quite charming.

A fascinating present-day scenario. The moon and the computer-generated eagle we finally step into the better part of time. The world, its people and their lives form Kangaroo’s USP, and art director, Late Milan and cinematographer Vetri do a phenomenal job of keeping us in the middle of the action with their impeccable technical skills throughout the movie. The talented crew ensures that the look and feel of the film meets the desired scope as per the expectations of the audience. It is to the film’s advantage that it shows where its huge budget was spent.

But once the initial awe of this enchanted world settles in, the thrill sets in. The many chinks in its armor become more apparent throughout the movie. It’s about the disaster that introduces them to each other. The betrayal that leads them to the climax. The commitment that makes them a family. They should have made for some of Kangua’s best parts to flesh out her character. Episodes featuring the pair traversing the jungle and surviving adversity are reminiscent of the oddly interesting dynamic between Kratos and his son Atreus from the 2018 video game ‘God of War’.

Based on this plot, the film, to add more action, drama and emotion. Udhiran (a criminally underused Bobby Deol), introduces his Aarthi tribe which seems to be cut from the same cloth as the Kalkeyas of the Baahubali franchise. If the red filters, the blood splashing kills, the corpses of murdered people and animals do not go home. They are the villains, their encounters with the Perumachi people make us bleed for them and assault our senses at one point.

Although the over-the-top nature of these primitive people can be discounted. But what comes as a big problem is how loud the film is. Note that the images on the Apple Watch display high-decibel noise when Dhoni arrives at one point in the movie.

Minus points

The heavy emotion in Kangua is captivating, despite the grand visuals. Some sequences of the narrative are not that impressive though. They will make the movie feel uncomfortable to the audience at times. The romance track featuring Suriya, Disha Patani could have been better in the movie. As a result, the entire movie could not match the huge hype around the film.

Overall, director Siva, who has designed some spectacular action scenes (especially in the climax) with the main theme he wanted to convey throughout the movie. The movie could not match the pace in the rest of the scenes. Although there was ample opportunity to make those scenes more interesting. Shiva sadly dilutes the overall effect by focusing more on highlighting the emotional drama.

Technical Aspects

Cinematographer Vetri Palaniswami’s visuals stand out as Kangaroo, one of the major highlights. The important scenes of the movie as well as the rest of the action scenes are beautifully shot as per the story, period setting. Nishad Yusuf’s editing is also quite impressive to me. The songs composed by music director Devi Sri Prasad are classy and very elegant, and their portrayal is particularly good. The background music was right with the characters of the movie. Siva as writer-director has done justice to his previous works. Grand production by producer K.E Gnanavela Raja indicated that he has not compromised in any aspect in his work to make Kanguva a memorable film under his banner.

Verdict

Kanguva is a period action movie, emotional drama with some impressive action sequences and emotional scenes. Especially Suriya’s power-packed performance. Amazing element in the climax. But routine screenplay, slow narration of few scenes, love story didn’t seem very impressive to me. Suriya seems to have succeeded in taking Kangua to the next level with his brilliant performance. Kangua will end up as an entertaining movie for Suriya fans only.

Conclusion

The movie uses the latest technology of the present day with graphics. I hope you will enjoy watching the movie now. So those who haven’t seen the movie must watch the film. The film has several emotional moments that will make you think. So definitely watch the movie.
